The app has the option to use the GPS only when you have the app in the foreground, or when its in the background as well. Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life. When location is being shared in the background, steps are taken to minimize battery consumption by using cell tower triangulation instead of relying solely on the GPS hardware.
